IT Park - Construction Update

Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) reviewed the conditions for commencement of work at the IT Park in Navalpattu here earlier this week.

Marg Constructions, which has been entrusted with the task of constructing ELCOT’s 50,000 square feet IT building in a two-acre plot on the 147.61 acre IT Park premises, has started its preparatory work in order to complete the project by the end of May 2010. According to official sources, work on creation of common infrastructure facilities and construction of IT space will progress simultaneously.

The ELCOT has conducted meetings with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. The TNEB has been provided with five acres of land to set up a 110 kv sub-station and the TWAD Board is exploring feasibility to provide 3MLD (million litres per day) water.

Official sources informed that the Highways Department had initiated steps to take over the 120 feet road linking the IT Park to the Tiruchi-Pudukkottai Highway for four-laning work. Construction of an 80-feet road from the IT Park to the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway, via Sholamadevi, is also on ELCOT’s agenda.

The State Government had alienated the land to ELCOT, and the Centre accorded Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status for the Tiruchi IT Park and duly notified the same in the Gazette on March 12, 2008.

Subsequently, the ELCOT allotted 10 acres of land to Sutherland Global Services. A similar extent of land has been earmarked for Cognizant Technology Solutions and two acres of land made available for HCL.

While other bigger players have adopted a ‘wait and watch’ approach, smaller IT companies have patronised the IT Park well. The entire IT space had been booked, a senior official said, observing that the prospects for cutting down operational costs, proximity to the international airport, and scope for nil attrition were vital factors favouring Tiruchi as an ideal IT destination. These companies have pinned hopes on the Southern Railway for operation of additional day-time express trains exclusively between Tiruchi and Chennai to foster their growth. According to an ELCOT publication, upon completion, the IT Park was expected to provide employment to 20,000 candidates directly and to 60,000 candidates indirectly.
