Tata Telecom in Trichy

COIMBATORE: Tata Communications, a leading telecom and internet services provider, is planning to focus on tier-II and tier-III cities this
year.

“We will expand our channel footprint to 70 cities from the current 50 by December 2009,” Tata Communications GM & national head - channel Cherian Thomas said. Aiming to tap the SME segment, the company is conducting road shows in smaller cities across the country.

Recently, it started offering services in Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Tirupur. “We will enter Salem, Erode and Vellore by this year-end,” said Mr Thomas.

He said all these days, non-availability of WiMax in smaller cities was a limitation to its growth. “Now with WiMax availability, we have decided to increase our channel footprint,” said Mr Thomas.

He said it has a right mix of products to enable companies to move from a capex model to an open model, which would help them save costs. “Instead of investing in dialer and database and set up a call centre, companies can use the hosted model in our premises,” said Mr Thomas.

The company has data centres in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, the UK, Singapore and the US. “Right now voice is a matured business for us. But obviously data usage will increase in time,” he said.

In Tamil Nadu market, he sees huge opportunities in Coimbatore and Tirupur due to the presence of entire spectrum spanning from textile machinery to finished products. Also, in Coimbatore, the company is planning to tap the education sector, which is now increasingly feeling the need to use technology.
