The doubling work of 170 km Villupuram–Tiruchi section

TIRUCHI: The doubling work of 170 km Villupuram–Tiruchi section sanctioned on an outlay of Rs. 900 crores will be taken up shortly.

The track doubling work on this priority section between Ariyalur and Valadi would be taken up during this financial year itself, the Divisional Railway Manager, S. Subramhanyan, told presspersons on the sidelines of the launch of cleanliness campaign at Fort Station here on Wednesday.

Heavy congestion of train traffic is witnessed during the night hours on the single line section in between Valadi and Ariyalur stations, as a majority of the overnight trains bound for Chennai from southern districts and vice-versa cross this section. Following this, the railway administration has taken a decision to take up the doubling work on this section (50 km) on a priority basis, so that the congestion and travelling time could be reduced considerably.

The gauge conversion work between Mayiladuturai and Villupuram (122 kms and Rs. 220 crores) on the main line is near completion. The trial run of locomotive on the newly laid BG track will take place on July 31. Regular services were likely to begin by October after the mandatory clearance by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, he said.

Referring to the completion of the electrification work on the Tiruchi – Villupuram section, Mr. Subramhanyan said the passenger / express trains were hauled by electrical locos likely to be operated in a month’s time, after getting the nod of the CRS, who had already inspected the completed project.

Tiruchi junction will be upgraded as a model junction as announced in the Railway Budget. The Railway Board will come out with details of the passenger amenities to be created in connection with this project. Work will begin as soon as instructions were received from the Board, he added.

Replying to a question, he said that the Tiruchi division had shown a growth of five to six per cent in its revenue earning in the first quarter of the current fiscal.
