Four road-over bridges sanctioned

Four road over-bridges, all across railway level crossings, have been sanctioned for Tiruchi district and the Highways Department is expected to call for tenders for the projects shortly.

One of the four bridges would come up along the south bank of the River Cauvery in the city, across the railway level crossing on the Oyamari Road.

Two others would come up at Manapparai and one at Lalgudi, sources in the Project Division of the State Highways Department told The Hindu.

The sanction of the bridge on the Oyamari Road would meet a felt need of the city residents.

With the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass Road being four-laned currently, the construction of the bridge would help ease the traffic flow in a big way and make it a major entry/exit route for the city.

The road, which links Chinthamani and the bypass road, had been underutilised owing to the frequent closure of the railway gate.

The Highways Department would spend about Rs.26 crore for this project.

The two bridges sanctioned for Manapparai were also expected to relieve traffic congestion in the fast-growing town, situated about 40 km from here.

The bridges would come up across the railway level crossings no.279 and 281.

The two bridges had sanctioned at a cost of about Rs.49.50 crore.

The fourth bridge would come up at Lalgudi, where again the frequent closure of the gate on railway level crossing had been posing much hardship to road users in the town.

The bridge had been sanctioned at a cost of Rs.20 crore.

The Railways would build these bridges from its own funds, while the Highways Department would construct the approach roads.

Sources said tenders for the projects would be called for within two to three months for all the four bridges after clearances were obtained from the Railways.
