Plan panel identifies Tiruchi for pilot project

TIRUCHI: The Planning Commission has selected Tiruchi district in the State for its pilot project of ‘Comprehensive District Agricultural Plan’ (C-DAP) for evolving a national agricultural policy in future.

The C-DAP aims at preparing an integrated agricultural plan for the district through participatory approach from the grass-root level elected bodies.

The focus will be on identification and maximum utilisation of the available natural, human and financial resources for achieving agricultural development, Collector T. Soundiah said.

Speaking at a meeting to explain the concept of C-DAP here on Sunday, Mr. Soundiah said that innovation in planning with an impetus in the growth of agriculture and allied sectors in rural areas was the focus of the plan.

All assistance would be extended for stepping up agricultural productivity, storage of produce, its value-addition so as to improve the returns and livelihood option for the villagers.

Village panchayat, panchayat union and district-level planning committees, each led by the elected representative of the respective local body, and comprising officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations as members, would be formed for preparing the blue print for the plan.

Based on the success of its implementation in Tiruchi district, the Centre would take up a decision on evolving a national-level policy for its extension throughout the country in course of time.

Joint Director of Agriculture N. Ponnusamy said that the district-level committee, led by the president of the District Panchayat, Sankeetha Vasanthakumar, had already been formed. The Collector was its ex-officio vice-chairman and the Joint Director of Agriculture, Member-Secretary. The district officials and others were members.

The committees in other tiers would be floated in course of time.

The district committee would recommend proposals for the agricultural development in the district
