NITTTR off campus at Trichy

CHENNAI: In an initiative aimed at addressing the need for grooming young teachers in engineering and polytechnic colleges in south India, the
National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chennai, has decided to launch nearly a dozen finishing schools to mould aspiring technical teachers.
"Today there is a situation where those who have just graduated with a BE/B.Tech degree are joining engineering colleges as teachers without mastering the nuances of teaching-learning process. To rectify this, we intend to enhance their capabilities through our finishing schools. The young graduates who aspire to take up teaching can enroll in the finishing schools and undergo a two week training programme during which they will be taught the nuances of teaching, better content delivery techniques and handling students," NITTTR (Chennai) director S Mohan said on Tuesday.

The training programme at the finishing schools will be conducted during June, July and August every year when the to-be-teachers would be relatively free. "Experts in individual branches of engineering will share their teaching experience with the trainees. Audio-visual teaching aids and animated CDs will also be used during the training programme," professor Mohan explained.

In addition to this, the NITTTR would launch two week training programmes in soft skills and communication skills for students of engineering colleges. "We are also exploring the feasibility of collaborating with international technical training and engineering institutions and universities in Singapore, Switzerland and United States of America to offer joint degree programmes for students here. This would also involve student exchange programmes," he added.

Annually, the NITTTR, which functions under the union ministry of human resources development, conducts around 500 training programmes to improve the capabilities of teaching staff at government and private polytechnic colleges and about 300 training sessions for teachers of engineering colleges.

"From this academic year, we are also introducing an M.Tech programme in Technical Education. This is a unique course where the students will be trained to be a good technical teacher. Students can also enroll for the M.Tech programme in Human Resource Development, which the NITTTR has been offering for the past 10 years," said Mohan.

Meanwhile, the State government has allocated land in Trichy for the NITTTR to establish an off-campus there. The building will be constructed with funding from the HRD ministry.
