Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP) to increase production

enders have been already floated for the purchase of plant and machinery worth Rs five crore during the year 2009-10, he added.

Though the production target at the HAPP was not achieved for the last year, efforts were on to achieve the current year''s target of Rs 91 crore, he said.

The HAPP, one of Asia's largest powder metallurgy plants dealing with tungsten alloys for the manufacture of kinetic energy projectiles, has the latest CNC machines and systems that could produce highly precise components to the accuracy of less than five microns and manufacture projectiles to the highest quality standard, HAPP General Manager R R Yadhava claimed.

The complete manufacturing and inspection processes were fully automated, he said, adding, the production of 105 mm FSAPDS was gradually phased out in 1995 and HAPP switched over to production of 120 mm and 125 mm FSAPDSs in the year 1997.
iruchirapalli: The Ordnance Factory Board, Kolkatta, has proposed to undertake a massive modernisation programme at the Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP) to increase the production of 125 mm FSAPDS of IMI design to 30,000 shots from the existing 15,000 shots.

Winding up the year-long silver jubilee celebrations of the HAPP here last night, OFT Board member (M and C) Subhash Chander said Rs 30 crore would be spent for the purchase of plant and machinery during the next five years period.

After phasing out of ARDE MK-I, 125 mm FSAPDS of IMI design was introduced in the year 2005, he said. Stating that it has successfully established the bulk manufacturing of Tungsten Alloy Pre-fragments for PINAKKA rocket, Bomb Body for 81 mm mortar bombs, Base Bleed and Adapters for 155 ERFB shells, he said the HAPP has tapped the civil market in a big way by supplying tailormade products to firms like Midhani, Hyderabad, HAL, Bangalore, and BHEL, Haridwar.

Apart from regular production activities, it has developed an anti-submarine rocket ''RGB-12'' for Navy which was currently under various 'user' trials at PINA, Pune. Another version of anti-submarine rocket ''RGB-60'' with improved capabilities was under development and manufacture. This anti submarine rocket was expected to be issued for 'user' trials by August 2009.

These rockets were so far imported by Navy, he said, however, the manufacture of these rockets would boost the indigenous effort through in-house R and D route.
