BHEL bags Rs 345 cr contract from NPCIL

NEW DELHI: State-run power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has bagged a Rs 345 crore contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to manufacture steam generators for its Kakrapara atomic power project in Gujarat. The company will manufacture these steam generators from its Trichy plant.

"Bhel has bagged the first-ever order for steam generators for nuclear sets for NPCIL’s Kakrapara atomic power project in Gujarat. The Steam Generators are to be designed, manufactured and tested according to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME Sec III Standards). The detailed design including design analysis like thermo hydraulics, stress analysis etc are to be carried out by Bhel," a company statement said on Friday. The NPCIL’s order includes manufacturing and supply of four steam generators of 700 MWe (megawatt electric). These generators will be used in the primary cycle of the nuclear power plant.

The 700 MWe steam generator is based on the design developed by BHEL for the first 540 MWe steam generators installed at Tarapur nuclear power plant. BHEL had also earlier supplied steam generators for 220 MWe nuclear reactors installed by NPCIL.

Bhel currently manufactures equipments that can generate 10,000 MW power capacity and is further augmenting this capacity to 15,000 MW per annum by December 2009. The company claims that equipments designed, manufactured and commissioned by it accounts for around 80% of NPCIL’s installed capacity of 4120 MW in the country. So far, Bhel has supplied state-of-the-art power generating equipment of various ratings corresponding to nearly 3,280 MW for various nuclear power plants.
