Trichy figures as Tier II city of IT Hub by NASSCOM Survey

Goa can be an ‘operational hub’ for software and business process outsourcing companies, according to a survey jointly conducted by industry body NASSCOM and global management consulting firm AT Kearney, titled ‘Location roadmap for IT-BPO growth: Assessment of 50 leading cities. The report examines the prospects for the growth of the IT-BPO industry beyond the top seven ‘leader’ cities – Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and the National Capital Region (NCR).
At least 15 Tier II cities can comfortably ‘challenge’ the leaders, while both Tier II and Tier III cities can function as operational hubs for the software companies. Tier II cities include Ahmedabad, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Nagpur, Thiruvananthapuram, Vadodara, Tiruchirapalli and Visakhapatnam. Tier III cities include Goa, Bhopal, Kanpur, Aurangabad, Gwalior, Hubli-Dharwad, Nashik, Mysore and Surat.
However, the success of these cities will depend upon ‘the speed and commitment with which the local city and State governments work to fill up the gaps identified’, by tax benefits like those given to the software technology parks of India (STPIs) and the special economic zones (SEZs) and creating the right talent pool, the report says.
India’s $64 billion IT-BPO industry employs 2 million people and generates 5.4 per cent of India’s gross domestic product (GDP). The industry is expected to increase its workforce to 8 million by 2018.
