IIM Trichy Update

The Indian Institute of Management proposed for Tiruchi is likely to come up on the premises of Bharathidasan University, according to knowledgeable sources.

The State Government is said to have evinced interest in identifying a chunk of unused land lying between the Bharathidasan University and the newly created Anna University for establishing the new IIM, in deference to the request made by Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh to identify suitable land for the purpose during his recent Chennai visit. Mr. Singh had reportedly said that the onus of providing free land for the new IIM vested with the State Government. The land between the two universities is the only space the former will be able to spare in the frontage, it is learnt.

Tiruchi was prioritised for establishment of the new IIM at the insistence of State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru since the State Government had decided to alter its earlier idea of up-grading Bharathidasan University into a Central University.

The Government subsequently opted for starting the proposed Central University anew in Tiruvarur district.

The pace of Bharathidasan University’s effort to shift its autonomous unit, the Bharathidasan Institute of Management, to the city campus in Khajamalai, has gathered momentum. The architectural design is expected to be approved in a week.
