Two metro cooridor planned for Trichy

The detailed feasibility report (DFR) for introducing a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) in Trichy has proposed two corridors for a total length of 45km connecting the northern suburbs of the city with the western suburbs and another connecting the eastern suburban areas with the southern part of the city.

Sources from the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), which completed the DFR, said that corridor 1 will be 19km long with 19 stations between Samayapuram and Vayalur. Corridor 2 is proposed for 26km linking Thuvakudi with Panjapur with 26 stations.

The DFR was submitted by M A Siddique, principal secretary to the government, managing director, CMRL to Ramesh Chand Meena, additional chief secretary, special initiatives, government of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

“During further study at the detailed project report (DPR) stage, the total number of stations for each route will be finalised. The state and central governments will discuss and decide on a suitable MRTS model,” a source said.

The type of metro network such as Metro Lite or Metro Neo will also be decided in the next phases. Further, the governments will discuss sanctioning funds for the proposal based on the DPR to be prepared.
