The Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO) has begun the process of rechecking the proposal on building a bus terminus in Srirangam.

It is learnt that the Tiruchi Corporation, which has planned to set up a terminus on Panchakarai, has prepared a detailed project report after taking into account various aspects and facilities, and submitted it to the high-power committee for administrative sanction.

As a part of the process, the TUFIDCO, which provides assistance to various infrastructural projects, is appraising the bus terminus proposal. A team of officials is likely to visit Tiruchi shortly to study the proposed site identified for building bus terminus.

A senior official of the corporation said that the team would study various components of the proposal. If needed, a few changes would be carried out based on the report of TUFIDCO officials. It would then be placed before the high power committee on Smart City projects for clearance.

Setting up of bus stand has been a long-pending demand of residents of Srirangam. It was mooted about 10 years ago. The demand gained strength when the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was elected to the Assembly from Srirangam constituency in 2011. The corporation subsequently unveiled a plan to build a bus stand in Srirangam in 2012-13 and earmarked ₹ 9 crore for the project.

It identified a 6.6 acre site near the Yatri Nivas on Panchakarai on the banks of the Coleroon. A detailed project report was also prepared then.

But it could not move further after the disqualification of Jayalalithaa as MLA in 2014. The proposal has been revived after a gap of about seven years. It is expected that it would cost ₹ 23 crore for building the terminus
