With Deepavali just two weeks away, the district police have erected temporary watch towers in busy market areas to monitor the festival shopping crowd and to prevent crime.

People in large numbers throng Pannerselvam Park, Brough Road, Nethaji Road, Old Clock Tower area and market areas for shopping. To ensure the safety of people and to prevent crime, the police department has erected watch towers at vantage points.

Personnel deployed in these towers will be equipped with binoculars to keep tight vigil on the crowd.

Senior police officials said that through public address systems, shoppers were being warned to be careful with their cash, and valuables while shopping. Apart from manual surveillance, cameras would also be installed in crowded places to monitor the crowd. Apart from these measures, police personnel in plain-clothes will be also deployed in market areas.

Security would be strengthened in bus stands, railway station and roads where commercial establishments are located, the official said.
