TRICHY: They were intended to ensure smooth access for commuters coming to as well as leaving the Thennur road over bridge (RoB) via Thennur high road and adjacent Sasthri road, but the service roads of Thennur RoB are in utter neglect. These roads on either end of the RoB are dotted with hotels, schools and government offices. Residents demand that the service roads should at least be given a temporary revival to see off the ensuing monsoon.

Besides providing access for Thennur and Sasthri road residents to Madurai road and West Boulevard road bypassing the railway track connecting Trichy fort and railway junction, the two service roads of the RoB also connect Thillai Nagar with Sivaprakasam road. Residents have been commuting the 8-foot-wide road wading through soil mounds and potholes. “Parents dropping children in schools nearby are the ones who use the road the most every day. With children along, they negotiate the damaged service road with much difficulty. Corrective measures should be taken before the onset of monsoon,” Bhavani Maniyan, a resident of Thillai Nagar, said. Trichy corporation sources said that tender would be floated soon for re-laying the road right from Thennur RoB’s starting point till the railway line for about 300 metres on either side at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh. “We plan to start the works at the earliest. Roadworks may be postponed if rain interrupts,” an official source said. However, residents demand that the civic body should at least take up temporary measures for levelling the roads’ surface.
