New tender to be floated to complete semi-ring road project in Trichy

TRICHY: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will identify a suitable contractor in a month to complete the pending portion of the semi-ring road connecting Thuvakudi with Panchapur here.
Simultaneously, paper work to complete the stretch between Panchapur and Jeeyapuram of the semi-ring road is expedited by the NHAI to avail the environmental clearance from ministry of environment and forest (MoEF), officials said.

The NH 67 expansion project, in other words semi-ring road project, connecting Jeeyapuram (on Karur-Trichy stretch of NH 67) with Thuvakudi (Trichy-Thanjavur stretch of NH 67) was proposed by the NHAI in 2007.

The 43-km-long semi-ring road would link five national highways connecting Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukkottai, and Thanjavur districts with Trichy to help commuters bypass the city traffic.

The project saw several struggles in the past decade due to legal hurdles, poor planning and official apathy. Though a portion (14km) of the stage II in the semi-ring road connecting Panchapur with Thuvakudi was completed, work was pending in the remaining 11km stretch between Mathur and Panchapur allegedly due to the disagreement between NHAI and a private contractor.

Overcoming the deadlock, the district administration on Friday informed that civil work for the pending project would resume in a month.

“The NHAI has initiated the process to float a tender for identifying a new contractor to complete the pending work between Panchapur and Thuvakudi. Civil work would resume in a month after a new contractor is identified,” district collector K Rajamani told TOI.
