The 20th Livestock Census began in the districts in the central region on Monday.

Data collection during the three-month long exercise is being done through tablet computers provided to the enumerators.

Various species of animals including cow, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig, horse, pony and poultry birds such as fowl, duck, emu, turkeys, quail and others possessed by households, household enterprises or non-household enterprises and institutions will be counted at their site, officials said.

Collector K. Rajamani, who inaugurated the exercise in Tiruchi in the presence of Murugesan, Joint Director (in-charge), Animal Husbandry, Tiruchi, said 138 enumerators and 29 supervisors would conduct the census in the district visiting door-to-door. Data collection through tablets will help in accurately and speedy enumeration, the Collector said and urged the people to extend their cooperation by providing correct details of the livestock being raised by them.
