The public park at Mukkombu was opened for public on Sunday after being closed for a month.

The park, a most-sought leisure destination for the entertainment-starved people of Tiruchi, was temporarily closed on August 23 following the collapse of a portion of the regulator across the Kollidam. With the work on plugging the breach taken up by the Public Works Department nearing completion, the park was partially reopened for the public on Sunday.

More than 5,000 visitors from Tiruchi and neighbouring towns thronged the park on Sunday. Despite Monday being the working day, according to PWD sources, more than 2,000 tourists visited Mukkombu.

However, they were restricted only in the southern side park of Mukkombu. No one was allowed to visit the northern side park due to the ongoing restoration works across the Kollidam.

A senior official said that visitors would not be allowed to use two-wheelers and cars on the Cauvery barrage. However, the workers and students of Vathalai could use the Cauvery barrage.
