Cleanliness campaign gathers momentum in Tiruchi

BHEL employees engaged in cleaning activity at Thiruverumbur railway station on Tuesday.
The State government’s Muzhu Sugathara Tamizhagam campaign got under way in the district on Tuesday.

Members of SHG groups and other volunteers took the cleaniness pledge in the presence of Collector K. Rajamani.

Stating that Tiruchi was among the 16 districts declared as open-defecation free, Mr. Rajamani said cleanliness was a key factor for environmental conservation and urged the student community to create awareness.

An awareness rally held by NSS volunteers of Bishop Heber College and Bharatidasan University Constituent College was flagged off by Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran in the presence of Field Publicity Officer K. Devi Padmanabhan.

Addressing a Swachh Bharat Special Outreach programme, Mr. Ravichandran urged the student community to take active part in plogging (collection of waste littered on the roadside by morning joggers) on Gandhi Jayanthi on October 2. More than one lakh persons would be mobilised for the exercise, he said and urged the public to cooperate with corporation workers.

The Commissioner called upon students to utilise social media to spread the message about managing degradable and non-degradable wastes among their peers and parents. More than 30 tonnes of non-degradable wastes were collected daily in the city, he said.

An 80-member group comprising BHEL employees, their family members, home guards personnel, technical apprentices, railway employees and sanitary workers undertook cleaning of Thiruverumbur railway station premises under the Swachhta Hi Sewa campaign.

V. Srinivasan, General Manager, Commercial, Marketing and Proposals (Fossil Boilers) and Logistics, BHEL Tiruchi, inaugurated the cleaning activity in the presence of S. Manivannan, Station Master, Thiruverumbur railway station.

A rally by students from nearby schools was also organised to create awareness on the significance of cleanliness.

BHEL has planned to conduct various events, including street plays and drawing activities, as part of the campaign.
