Wear helmets and safeguard your lives: police

The city and rural police adopted an approach of persuasion and firmness while counselling two-wheeler riders to wear helmets, here on Tuesday.

Teams of city police personnel at Srirangam, Junction, TVS Toll Gate and other vantage points prevailed upon motorists the need for both the rider and pillion rider to wear helmets for safety of lives.

The police personnel also urged the public to follow other road safety norms and to refrain from using cellphones while driving.

“Wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders as well as pillion riders is a mandatory requirement. When there is good compliance for the rule in cities such as Bengaluru and New Delhi, there is no reason why it should not be the same elsewhere,” Deputy Commissioner (Crime and Traffic) A. Myilvaganan said.

“It is a question of developing the right attitude. In fact, the danger of fatality is more for the pillion rider,” he pointed out.

Tiruchi Rural SP Ziaul Haque led a two-wheeler rally at Manjathidal stop along Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway to create awareness on the need for pillion riders to wear helmet. “Couples need to avoid travelling with their kids on two-wheelers. The emphasis will be more on sensitising the public than booking cases,” he said.

The rally, organised by a team from Tiruverumbur police station and led by Inspector Madhan, covered the main road and Amman Nagar before returning to the starting point.
