The technology business incubator (TBI) of the SASTRA University in Thanjavur has procured Internet of Things (IoT) kits from Spain with an aim to pursue projects on smart agriculture and smart city.
“As Spain is a country where IoT is extremely developed, we procured the necessary kits from a company named Libelium four to five weeks back to go ahead with our projects. IoT is where our smart city project will be leveraging technology,” said CEO of the incubator V Sridharan.
While the smart agriculture scheme mainly focuses on irrigation, smart city predominantly lays its emphasis on making the public transportation more efficient. Taking European cities as the reference, TBI has kick-started its project on transportation system and is working towards implementing two technologies: peer-to-peer tracking system and safety and surveillance system, both in public transportation.

While the peer-to-peer tracking system will be something along the lines of ride tracking systems provided by online transportation companies, the safety and surveillance is aimed at incorporating cameras in the buses.
“Through the peer-to-peer tracking system, when a person shares about his/ her bus travel details with another, the latter would be able to get live updates about that particular travel,” Sridharan told TOI. He added that the TBI team is looking to come up with an advanced e-challan system for buses.
Under the Smart City project, TBI is planning to come up with pollution tracking systems in the future. Smart Agriculture project, with the help of moisture sensors, will mainly focus on irrigation. “As we know water scarcity is a major issue, the moisture sensor will only give an alert when irrigation needs to be done,” Sridharan said.
The projects are expected to be completed in six to nine months’ time
