New water scheme to be over by year-end

A combined drinking water supply scheme which would cater to 293 rural habitations in Musiri, Thathaiyengarpet, Thuraiyur and Uppilliyapuram unions in the district is expected to commissioned by December, according to TWAD Board officials.

The scheme would benefit a population of about 1.5 lakh who would get a per capita supply of 55 litres a day.

The scheme will provide drinking water supply to 21 rural habitations in Musiri union, 73 in Thathaiyengarpet union, 122 in Thuraiyur and 77 habitations in Uppilliyapuram union.

The scheme is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs. 140.20 crore. The project is being financed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund. Work on construction of a collector well on the Cauvery river at Sevanthilingapuram in Musiri and 5.20 lakh-litre capacity collection sump at Vazhavanthi in Thathaiyengarpet union were in progress. The branch pumping mains and feeder mains of the scheme would run for 637 km.

TWAD officials said that nearly 54% of the project work had been completed.

Padma Raghunathan, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Chennai; Baiju N. Kurup, Deputy General Manager; and V. Rajaraman, Assistant General Manager, inspected the work recently along with L. Panneerselvam, Superintending Engineer, and G.Kathiresan, Executive Engineer, TWAD Board.
