To create awareness among locals as well as to generate money to improve the status of the centuries-old Uyyakondan canal passing through Trichy, a fundraising event will be held here on June 23. The profit generated in the event planned as a musical-cum-comedy programme will be handed over to “Citizens For Uyyakondan (CFU)”, a non-profit social welfare forum comprising people from various walks of life involved in the canal restoration activities.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Rockcity and Kauvery hospital, the event will have television personalities performing music and comedy shows for about three hours. For the past six months, the CFU has been beautifying the banks of Uyyakondan canal, a Chola-era water body branching off from Cauvery near Pettavaithalai to irrigate cultivable lands in Trichy and Thanjavur districts. Organisers said that the funds generated will be used for canal development work.
“Tickets price are classified into Rs 2,000, Rs 1,000, and Rs 500 each. We have planned to sell about 650 tickets for the event scheduled to be held at Hotel Sangam on June 23. After meeting the programme expenditure, the money generated through ticket sales will be handed over to the forum,” an organiser said.
Organisers said the entertainment event was planned with an objective to financially help the movement involving Trichy people to safeguard the irrigation canal built by Raja Raja Cholan, supposed to be fresh water body but now facing pollution threats from nearby residents and commercial establishments.

Comprising medical professionals, students, social workers, and architects, CFU forum has divided the 8.4km stretch of Uyyakondan passing through the city as six zones to develop the water body. Periodical meetings and weekend cleanup drives are conducted by the forum to safeguard the 87km long canal that enriches the groundwater table of the city.
