Beneficiaries will be selected as per quota system: Minister
A total of 3,922 beneficiaries will be given subsidised two-wheelers in Tiruchi district in the first phase, according to Tourism Minister Vellamandi N. Natarajan.

Inaugurating the distribution of Amma two-wheeler scheme for working women here on Sunday, he said that the scheme, conceived by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, had received very good response among working women.

It had received a large number of applications for the scheme from Tiruchi district. The State government has decided to distribute 3,922 two-wheelers to the eligible beneficiaries in 2017-18. Of them, 1,992 beneficiaries would be selected from rural areas.

In urban areas, 1,930 beneficiaries would receive the two-wheelers at 50% subsidy. Mr. Natarajan said the beneficiaries would be selected as per quota system.

The quota for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes would be 21% and 1% respectively. Similarly, the quota for physically challenged persons would be 4%. Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities S. Valarmathi said that the beneficiaries have been selected based on the standard procedure.

The subsidised two-wheeler scheme was an attempt to empower women. Though several women had come up in their life, a section of them were still waiting to get a chance.

More and more women should come forward to opt for employment or to start new business ventures. The scheme would help the women to take up new assignments, she added.

Collector K. Rajamani, Members of Parliament P. Kumar, T. Rathinavel and others participated.
