Swachh Survekshan team begins evaluation of Tiruchi city



A five-member team, deputed by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, began its survey of the city under the Swachh Survekshan 2017-18 on Monday.

Dividing into three groups, the team members began their evaluation by inspecting the door-to-door collection of garbage in different parts of the city early in the morning.

They then held a meeting with N. Ravichandran, Commissioner cum Special Officer, Tiruchi Corporation and senior officials. They were briefed on the administrative setup, revenue sources, budgetary provisions, key infrastructures, solid waste management system, coverage of underground drainage, functioning of micro compost yards, sustainability of sanitary complexes and others.

The team members belonging to a private financial services company verified the documentation of a Swachh Survekshan proposal submitted by the Corporation that runs into about 5,000 pages.

Later, a group of two members went out to the city to physically verify the infrastructure and citizen services claimed in the documentation. Another group set out to record the feedback of citizens. The assessors will be in the city up to Wednesday. They are expected to physically check the cleanliness at Central Bus Stand, Chathram Bus Stand, Railway Station and thickly populated areas. They will assess the functioning of sanitary complexes, maintenance aspects, public patronage, garbage cleaning mechanism and others.

It is learnt that the assessors will study the solid waste management practices, functioning of micro compost yards, on site composting at marriage halls, markets and hotels, initiatives on preventing open defecation, coverage of individual household latrines, greenery practices and community kitchen by using bio gas. They will collect data on staff strength, sanctioned posts, vacancy positions, conservancy system, method of garbage collection, solid waste management and others.

After corroborating details provided in the document, the team will award marks on the basis of the manual of Swachh Survekshan 2018. Out of 4,000 marks, documentation will carry 1,400 marks. The marks for field inspection will be 1,200. The marks for citizen feedback will be 1,200.

“We have taken all out efforts to score maximum marks on various parameters stipulated in the manual of Swachh Survekshan 2018. We sincerely hope that we will better last year’s ranking,” he said.

The city was adjusted as the sixth cleanest in the Swachh Survekshan 2016-17. It secured second and third positions respectively in 2014-15 and 2015-16
