In a move which could lessen the cost and time spent on establishing bus shelters, the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has set up a precast bus shelter in Trichy.
The precast bus shelter, roughly measuring 150 square feet, is a portable structure which could be moved to places where there is demand for a bus shelter.
The precast bus shelter has been set up near the district collectorate.

It will take two-three weeks to construct a normal 150 sq ft bus shelter, which would cost around Rs 7 lakh. But a precast bus shelter can be set up in a day, and it will cost only Rs 5.95 lakh.
"The bus shelter has a seating facility and can act as a shelter for the public in abnormal weather conditions. Instead of going for the conventional structure, such precast bus shelter would cut down the cost and time for us. Portability is the advantage," R G Saravanan, junior drafting officer, DRDA Trichy, said.
The precast structure is a single mould made of concrete mixture and can be placed anywhere, once the basement is prepared.
The DRDA is planning to install similar such bus shelters in other parts of the district after obtaining permissions from local bodies concerned.
