WITH an intake of 18 students, Tamil Nadu National Law School (TNNLS) in Tiruchy will be offer-ing post-graduation programmes from the upcoming academic year of 2018-19. As the first batch of students will be graduating this year, they need not worry about opting for higher education. A one-year course on LL.M. (Master of Law) will be started this year, announced T Vengadesan, registrar of TNNLS. Some of the LL.M specialisations will be intellectual property law, environmental law, criminal law and family law.

The admission for PG courses is based on the marks attained through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Aptitude-based questions will be asked in the test. The candidates need to be up to date with current affairs and knowledge of legal background to be able to dear the test.
There is no specified age limit that is mentioned, the registrar added. Adding to this, the TNNLS is putting in efforts to popularise CLAT especially among Class XII students.

Admissions to UG and PG degree programmes in law across 19 national law universities in India are done through CLAT exam. "Some of our student ambassadors have already started their work by spreading awareness with the higher secondary students to familiarise them with CLAT. There seems to be a knowledge gap among the Class XII students on CLAT with many of them not aware of it," said Vengadesan. The TNNLS is situated at Navalurkuttapattu on Dindigul Main Road and established at a cost of Rs 100 crore.

The law school is a university established in 2012 with the campus inaugurated by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa. The law school provides two integrated courses namely BA LLB (Honours) and B Com LLB (Hon-ours), respectively, with an intake of 55 students for each course. Vengadesan mentioned that they are likely to approach the district-level education officers in the State to promote the exam. "We are offering programmes on par with national universities with specialised teaching faculties as the main aim of the institution is to provide quality legal education to students. Usually, the candidates opt for pursuing legal studies as one of their family members or their school authorities would provide guidance." The registrar also spoke about the course pattern where students will be going for internships. "Around 100 students will get training from experts in Supreme Court and High Court," he added. The last date to file online application is March 31 and the exam is scheduled to be held on May 13.
