ISRO satellite to study clean wards of Tiruchi

Satellite technology will be deployed to identify the cleanest ward in Tiruchi city, said Mylswamy Annadurai, Director, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. He is the Brand Ambassador for Tiruchi City Corporation’s clean city drive.

Speaking at a programme, he said an award would be given to the cleanest ward in the city to create a healthy competition among the officials concerned and field workers. An ISRO satellite would be used to study the clean areas of the city. The satellite images could be enlarged to pinpoint the clean/unclean areas. Based on accurate data and analysis of the images, the best clean ward would be selected, and ISRO would recognise the best performing ward.

Noting down the importance being given to Swachh Bharat Mission by the Central government, Mr. Annadurai said time had come for the people to shun open defecation. The practice had to be given up immediately and it was important for the civic bodies to accelerate the programmes to make all cities, towns and villages open defecation free.

He said he was happy to be part of the clean city initiative of the Tiruchi Corporation, which was aiming for number one clean city in the Swachh Survekshan Survey 2018. It would be possible if all stakeholders, including the civic administration, field workers and residents, joined together. The residents should play a major role in keeping their surroundings neat and clean. Clean habits should be developed as a practice.

The country was marching ahead in various fields including space research. While it had improved the image of the country among developed nations, it had to be accepted that the country still lagged behind in cleanliness, he added.

Collector K. Rajamani said the Tiruchi Corporation, which was ranked among top 10 cleanest cities in the country for three years consecutively, had spearheaded its activities to improve the ranking. It had been decided to effectively enforce plastic ban in the city. Also, a set of new initiatives would be announced shortly.

Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi City, Amalraj, Corporation Commissioner cum Special Officer N. Ravichandran, music composer James Vasanthan, Halo FM Tiruchi station manager Saha and others spoke.

Earlier, Mr. Annadurai released a song composed by Mr. Vasanthan on Swachh Tiruchi.
