Abhyasa Kendra opens production unit

Abhyasa Kendra, a school for children with special needs in Srirangam run by the Chennai-based Kinchitkaram Trust, recently inaugurated a small production unit to manufacture eco-friendly areca fibre plates and packaged spice mixes that will be operated completely by its students.

A total of 28 young adults with special needs underwent vocational training for over a year ahead of the formal opening of the unit on December 14. The plates produced by the unit are priced at Rs. 5, while spice mixes cost Rs. 80 per 250 gm.

“The making of spice mixes involve processes such as grinding and mixing which helps in improving the fine and gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination of individuals with special needs. The plate-making helps to improve their proprioception, leg strength and motor skills,” said a note from the Kendra.

Vedic scholar Velukkudi Sri U. Ve Krishnan Swami guides the Kinchitkaram Trust. Abhyasa Kendra was established in Srirangam in October 2015.
