Residents oppose compost yard

Members of Sri Sai Nagar, Santhiyagu Nagar, EB Colony Residents Welfare Association petitioned the District Collector on Monday, seeking his intervention to prevent the Corporation from setting up a micro compost yard at Rani Meiyammai Nagar in Ward 37.

The Corporation has been establishing micro compost yards at different parts of the city to process solid waste locally.

In a representation, the association members said that nearly 5,000 families resided in Rani Meiyammai Nagar, Vasantha Nagar, Santhiyagu Nagar, Sai Nagar, Sriram Nagar and EB Colony.

The Corporation was planning to establish a micro compost yard at a site earmarked for a park, they alleged.

Residents of the locality were not consulted on the move, which could lead to environmental and health hazards, they said.
