Cleaning operation taken up at Cauvery riverbed

The corporation on Wednesday launched a massive clean-up operation on the Cauvery riverbed.

A huge number of devotees took holy dip in the river as part of Cauvery Mahapushkaram festival which concluded last week. With many devotees leaving behind old clothes and puja materials after bath, a huge amount of refuse had accumulated on the river bed especially after water release was reduced.

Taking cognisance of the problem, the corporation on Wednesday roped in services of student volunteers from Srimad Andavan College of Arts and Science, Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College and St.Joseph’s College to carry out a cleaning exercise on the river, especially near the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat. About 500 students and 100 corporation workers collected nearly 10 tonnes of garbage, which was subsequently removed from the spot by corporation lorries, according to a press release issued later in the day.

Earlier, Collector K.Rajamani inaugurated the exercise in the presence of N.Ravichandran, Corporation Special Officer-cum-Commissioner, and S.Amudhavalli, City Engineer (in-charge).
