Civic body on a drive to end mosquito menace

The Tiruchi Corporation has taken up a drive to destroy mosquito breeding sources in households and has asked city residents to ensure that water is not left stagnant in discarded storage containers or vessels. It has also asked owners of under-construction buildings to ensure that water is not left stagnant in temporary tanks and other containers in their premises.

Corporation Special Officer-cum-Commissioner N. Ravichandran supervised a drive in K. Abishekapuram zone on Monday. About 250 sanitary workers were deployed and as many as 5,080 houses were checked during the drive, a Corporation official said. A large number of discarded tyres and plastic containers were removed during the drive. Apart from fogging, abate solution was used as larvicide at mosquito breeding sources.

Mr. Ravichandran also distributed pamphlets to raise awareness among residents in the zone and urged them to follow the Corporation instructions to check the spread of dengue. In a statement, Mr. Ravichandran said that notwithstanding the measures taken by the Corporation, awareness seemed to be low among residents in some places and the mosquito breeding sources have not been properly removed. He warned that owners of under construction buildings would face legal action if water was found stagnant in containers on their premises. “They should comply with the directive immediately. Otherwise, the civic body would remove such mosquito breeding sources and collect the expenses incurred from the owners,” he said.

Swachh Bharat

The Corporation has also launched a cleaning drive under the Swachh Bharat campaign. On Sunday, about 125 Corporation workers were deployed to clean the Central Bus Stand. The drive would go on till October 1 and Corporation workers in association with volunteers would clean various places of public congregation in the city, including heritage sites and places of worship, Corporation officials said. Besides, short-film, painting and essay writing contests on the topic of cleanliness would be held as part of the drive, they added.
