IT industry in the cusp of opportunity and prosperity



The IT industry is in the cusp of opportunity and prosperity in the phase of transition and a lot could be done through digital disruption, R. Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice-Chairman, Cognizant India, said on Sunday.

Seeking to allay apprehensions caused by 'gloom and doom' talk about the industry, Mr. Chandrasekaran said the innovation agility is what is required to prevent the industry from perishing.

Citing instances of business models followed by a global footwear brand, flower exporters in Holland, Mr. Chandrasekaran said the operational effectiveness through leveraging technology was the basis for life-time engagement of customers.

The thinking about growth has to be be exponential, not incremental, he said, speaking at the Alumni Day celebrations of National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi.

Mr. Chandrasekaran joined the NIT-T Director Mini Shaji Thomas and president of Regional Engineering College's Alumni Association Krishna Sai in presenting Young Alumni and Distinguished Alumni Awards.

The two Young Alumni Achiever Awardees were Vaibhave Lodha, Co-founder, ftcash, for excellence in Entrepreneurial venture, and V. Vishnu, IAS, Executive Director, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, for excellence in Public Administration.

The Distinguished Alumni Award winners were Sridhar Mahadevan, Director, Artificial Intelligence Centre, Stanford Research Institute, USA (Academic / Research), Jayanth Ramakrishnan, Chief Operating Officer, Bastion Technologies, Houston, TX, USA (Corporate/ Industry); Nagaraj Murthy, Vice-president of Operations, High-Speed Verification Business Unit at Cadence Design Inc (Corporate / Industry); Srimathi Shivashankar, Vice-President, HCL Technologies (Corporate/ Industry); A. Vijayarajan, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of InnAccel Technologies (Entrepreneurial Venture); Prabhu G Kumar, Co-Founder an Board Member, Logic Group of Companies (Entrepreneurial Venture); R. Vasudevan, Secretary of YOKE Society (Service to society at large); and Saibal Mitra, Secretary and Managing Director, Deenabandhu Trust, Kolkatta (Service to society at large).

Presiding over the function, the NIT-T Director said an Alumni Interaction Cell will be constituted with the objectives of encouraging entrepreneurship among students, improve the perception about the institution at national and international levels, and streamlining funds for scholarships and endowments.

With placements of 97% for B.Tech and 87% for post-graduation at NIT-T, it was the best in the country, the institution was placed first among NITs and 11th overall in NIRF (National Institute Framework Ranking), Dr. Mini said.
