Uyyakondan canal to be free of hyacinth soon

In the wake of complaints by residents, the Public Works Department (PWD) has begun the task of clearing hyacinth on the Uyyakondam canal.

A group of workers, assisted by an earth mover, have been involved in the drive.

The work that began on Wednesday is expected to continue for a few more days.

A senior official of the PWD said that hyacinth had spread for about 11 km on the canal.

“If there was good flow of water, it would be easy for removing hyacinth. There was absolutely no flow now and hence the department would use its resources to remove hyacinth in the entire stretch of Tiruchi Corporation limit,” the official said.
