Kollidam bridge work begins

The highways department commenced construction of a bridge across the Kollidam river linking Thiruvanaikaval and the Grand Anicut road near Grand Anicut in Thanjavur district. "The work is at foundation level. Soon the bridge will be completed and open for public use," said A. Jayachandra Suryanarayanan, assistant divisional engineer, highways department. He told press persons who were taken to see the work on Tuesday, that the bridge, being constructed at a cost of ‘67 crores will be 1,052 mts long, 12.90 mts wide with l0.50 mts for vehicles to move and 2.40 mts for pathways on either side. A total of 25 pillars will support the bridge. People of Killikudu and Koviladi villages in Thanjavur district and Srirangam in Tiruchy district will benefit, he said. The highways department has also taken up the laying of 16.20 km long road on Grand Anaicut to Cauverypoompattiam road from Thirukovilur road to Thiruvaiyaru at a cost of 1.3 crores. The road will be completed by December, said J. Muralikumat assistant divisional engineer, highways department.
