Tiruchi residents reel under searing heat

Tiruchi and most of the neighbouring districts in the central region experienced searing heat on Tuesday.

The maximum temperature in the city hovered around 42 degree Celsius, four degrees above normal, and the hot winds made it feel hotter.

Heat wave conditions prevailed in neighbouring districts such as Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai.

The city had recorded 42 degree Celsius on Monday too, just a notch lower than last year’s high of 42.4 degree Celsius recorded on April 25.

The all-time high for the month is 42.8 degree Celsius recorded in 1896, according to data on extreme weather conditions on the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) website.

Traffic thin

Traffic was thin on the roads for most part of the day.

In view of the IMD warning of a heat wave, the district administration too had issued an advisory urging people to stay indoors. Tuesday being a local holiday, in view of the Samayapuram car festival, gave some respite to students and office goers.

Normally, Tiruchi experiences peak summer in May when temperatures soars over 42 degree Celsius.

But April has been very hot for the second consecutive year in the city.

The heat is increasingly turning unbearable, complained residents. “It feels like being in Delhi in peak summer. The hot wind makes for sweltering heat. Fans are proving to be far too inadequate to give any relief,” said G.Chithra, a tailor.

Some parents were also anxious about sending their children to schools over the next few days.

“Given the heat wave conditions, the government should have ordered the closure of schools much earlier this year, at least by April 10. Children are needlessly being exposed to health hazards,” said Sendurvelan, another resident.

The IMD on Tuesday brought some good news predicting a normal monsoon, but residents are fervently hoping for some summer showers to beat the heat over the next few days.
