The Tiruchi City Corporation has planned to construct 4,022 more Individual House Hold Latrines (IHHL).

Of them, 1,011 toilets will be constructed in 2017-18, and the remaining will be taken up in 2018-19.

The programme is aimed at slowly weaning away those dependent upon community toilets.

Corporation Commissioner-cum-Special Officer N. Ravichandran told The Hindu that administrative sanction would be shortly given for constructing IHHL toilets in the city.

It would be implemented under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). It would cost Rs. . 12,000 for construction of each toilet.

Of this, Rs. . 4,000 would be borne by the Central Government.

The contribution of the State government and city corporation would be Rs. .2000 each.

Remaining Rs. .4,000 would have to be borne by the beneficiary.

He said identification of beneficiaries was going on. It was important to find beneficiaries, who had space to construct individual toilet.

Survey

A team of enumerators had been employed for the survey.

It would be completed within three days.

Mr. Ravichandran said the Corporation constructed 1,900 toilets in the city in 2016-17.

According to a survey, about 10,000 odd houses were yet to have individual toilets.

Most of them were in newly-added wards, interior areas and urban slums.

The number was likely to go up further as those who wanted to construct budget houses might seek financial assistance under the IHHL scheme to construct the toilets.

Mr. Ravichandran added that the city had about 450 community toilets to cater to the needs of residents, who did not have individual toilets.

They were mostly in urban slums.

Most of them were serving the residents well, preventing open defecation in the city.
