Mahakumbabhishekam of Lalgudi temple on June 4

With the work on the renovation of the famous temple dedicated to Sri Saptharishiswarar at Lalgudi nearing its final phase, the ‘mahakumbabhishekam’ of the temple will be performed on June 4. The six special‘yagasalai’ pujai will commence from June1.

The renovation work was taken up about a couple of years ago, particularly after a major fire engulfed the Sri Sashti Mandapam in 2013. The entire ‘mandapam’ suffered severe damage and it was renovated on a priority basis. The ‘dwajasthambam’, the ‘raja gopuram’ and other shrines were renovated in the second phase.

According to official sources, the work on renovation of the ‘vimanams’ of the deities would be completed in course of time. There was a major need for draining the storm water all around the ‘prakaram’. During heavy downpour, a large sheet of water is seen stagnating on the outer prakaram and it has been planned to clear it through some donor work.

The work on the renovation of the rajagopuram involved intricate maintenance and painting. The temple authorities had used environmental-friendly paints as per the latest directive. The temple has a sprawling area which was used as a goshala (Pasumadam) decades ago. But, now the site was in disuse. “We have sent a plan to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department to construct a marriage hall on the Pasumadam area so as to augment revenue for the temple,” the official told The Hindu.
