Amid instances of property crimes getting reported frequently here, the City Police authorities have proposed to increase the strength in the crime wing in police stations here.

Manpower is to be augmented by drawing personnel serving in the City Armed Reserve and deploying them in the crime wing.

The City Police headed by the Commissioner of Police account for a total number of 14 police stations falling under Cantonment, Srirangam, Fort and Golden Rock Ranges.

Presently, crime wings headed by an Inspector of Police exist in Gandhi Market, Fort, Cantonment, Srirangam, K. K. Nagar, Woraiyur and Ponmalai police stations.

In the remaining police stations, a Sub Inspector of Police has been posted with constables working under them.

Police stations such as E. Pudur, Airport, Ariyamangalam, Palakkarai and Thillai Nagar do not have a separate Inspector of Police to head the crime wing, although it has an Inspector of Police to head the law and order wing.

The process of increasing the strength in the crime wing was underway, the sources said adding that the strength would be deployed accordingly in stations, including Thillai Nagar, E. Pudur, Airport, Ariyamangalam and Palakkarai.

Property crimes of different types have been reported within the city limits including vehicle thefts, robbery, cheating by diversion and burglary despite deployment of bike patrolling parties. While breakthroughs have been achieved in many such offences, there have been some instances where cases have not been cracked.
