NIT-T gets national award

The National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi has received National Excellence Award for championing social causes at the 10th ASSOCHAM Higher Education Summit held on Thursday.

Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT-T received the award from Sandeep Jajodia, President, ASSOCHAM, in the presence of Prakash Javadekar, Minister for Human Resources and Development, at a function held in New Delhi.

The award is given in recognition of NITT’s social outreach movement – HumaNITTy – which has, in 2016, reached out to over 4500 children, 300 inmates of destitute homes, 300 visually challenged people, 200 transport staff and 100 mentally challenged persons. HumaNITTy is an umbrella social organization of NIT,Tiruchi, with first-year under graduates to Ph.D students as members.

Taking inspiration from the Prime Minister’s Mann ki Baat programme of September 2016, HumaNITTy provided audio books to the visually challenged through special camps. The volunteers spent time with destitutes and in old age homes besides building homes, augmenting school infrastructure and donating more books in the libraries.

A number of children saw their dreams turn real when gifts were distributed during Dan Utsav. Moreover, the institute has generously contributed to natural calamities such as the Nepal earthquake, Andra Pradesh cyclone and the Chennai floods, a NIT-T press release said.
