IIM Trichy’s PGPM now equivalent to a master’s from an Indian university

IIM TrichyIndian Institute of Management, Trichy, added a feather to its cap as its postgraduate programme in management (PGPM) was declared equivalent to the master’s degree of an Indian university for the purpose of admission to higher studies. The certification from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) will allow the PGPM students from IIM Trichy to take up higher studies in foreign universities and apply for government jobs as their PGPM qualification would be treated on par with master’s degree of an Indian university.

The 11th IIM to be set up by HRD ministry, IIM Trichy has three academic programmes – a two-year full time residential PGPM, a full time residential fellow programme in management (FPM) for doctoral candidates and a two-year post graduate programme in business management(PGPBM) for working executives at its Chennai campus.

The equivalence proposal had been made to AIU to make life easy for IIM Trichy’s students interested in pursuing higher studies. The matter was placed before the Equivalence Committee at its meeting held on January 5, 2017, and later in the meeting of the governing council held on January 9,2017 in AIU House, Delhi. The proposal was approved as IIMs are the premier institutions under the HRD ministry.

With this move IIM Trichy now joins IIMs Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Indore, Bangalore, Kolkata and Kozhikode as an institute with equivalence certificate for PGDM.

AIU has also stated that the condition of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approval and NBA (National Board of Accrediation) accreditation will not be applicable in the case of IIMs.

IIM Trichy director Dr Prafulla Agnihotri and the students said they were happy with the move.
