Civic body vows to take up pending development projects

The half-a-century-old garbage dumping facility at Ariyamangalam is making life miserable for residents living in surrounding areas. Its relocation, a long pending demand of 5,000-odd families, was a promise made by the AIADMK regime during the 2011 assembly election. It remains unfulfilled. There are a number of such city projects pending, which the previous AIADMK government promised.Garbage from 65 wards of the city corporation is dumped in the composite yard at Ariyamangalam spread across 43 acres.

Residents in the vicinity are suffering because of the smoke emitted from the yard and frequent fire accidents. Insects and flies from the garbage too are a menace. The corporation made attempts to relocate the dumping yard. The issue was raised first in 2011 by residents in E Pudur against bringing it to their backyard and resistance from people in other localities continued ever since the proposal for relocation of the dumping facility was taken up.Another serious issue not addressed is the letting out of sewage water into the Cauvery in three places.
