Trichy first in country to get automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast system

The automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast system (ADS-B), a surveillance system to track aircraft with the help of satellites, was commissioned at the international airport here on Tuesday.

The surveillance system was introduced on a trial basis in 21 airports across the country, but Trichy became the first airport where the system was commissioned. The technology was under trial for the past one month. It was finally commissioned by V Somasundaram, member of the airport navigation and surveillance unit of Airports Authority of India in Bengaluru.

V Somasundram, after launching the system, said the ADS-B system could help airlines reduce flying time and also improve safety thorough better awareness of the situation in the air. The advanced mechanism has been installed at the air traffic control (ATC) station in the airport. It has been integrated with the Chennai radar data and can also optimise the flight through direct route feeds.

He added that the system also had other benefits, in the form of lower fuel consumption, savings and emission cuts. "Advanced systems in the ATC can bring down fuel consumption and reduce costs during airline travel, thus encouraging more people to opt for air travel," said Somasundaram.

During the trials, it was found that changing the conventional Trichy - Dubai route via Sulur to another direct route would reduce at least 15 minutes of travel time, thus saving fuel. The method is soon to be adopted by the airlines flying to Gulf countries.

For long, the ATC in Trichy was not on a par with the systems used in Chennai or Thiruvananthapuram, from where signals are usually shared during a crisis or if information is required on any flight data, but with the introduction of ADS-B, the radar will now have the capacity to cover a wide area and go beyond the Madurai airspace. The approach distance of the airline flying to any place can be shared easily so that airlines can fly in the shortest and the easiest route available without any hassle.
