Trichy corporation awarded for effective solid waste management

The city corporation has been awarded for effective solid waste management in the city using an advanced monitoring technology, radio frequency identification system (RFID). The award was given by Skoch, a Gurgaon-based group that deals with social issues.

The RFID tag was designed to monitor garbage collection from various sources to its destination, Ariyamangalam dumping yard. The city corporation in collaboration with a private firm introduced the RFID attached dumpsters in 17 wards of the city corporation in the first phase.

These dumpsters are monitored with the help of software, 'Chitragupta', by the private agency. They keep a tab on workers and their cleaning activity. When the dumpsters gets cleaned, the corporation officials receive a message in their mobile phones.

The system has also facilitated better segregation of waste into degradable and bio-degradable waste. Conservancy workers were provided training on collection and segregation, which was implemented in Srirangam zone a few months ago. Ariyamangalam dumping yard receives nearly 400 metric tons of garbage daily. The entire dumping yard is also brought under the CCTV surveillance for effective monitoring of the site.

A senior official of the city corporation, who attended the event in New Delhi, said, "Several other corporations also came up with innovative projects that were implemented in their respective cities. We went through the semifinals in similar category the previous year, but we managed to bag an award this year."
