Committee to oversee immediate airport terminal expansion

A special committee will be formed to oversee the immediate expansion of the Trichy international airport building, where the passenger traffic has spiked to around 1,000 people in the peak hours, chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI) R K Srivastava said here on Saturday. The committee will discuss the overall development of the airport.

The linear expansion of the airport building- 80m on the departure side and 101m on the arrival side- is expected to cost Rs 232 crore and will double the existing capacity of five lakh people to about 12 lakh. The schedule for the expansion work will be drawn up, the official said. Once it begins, the work is expected to be completed in four years.

The AAI chairman while addressing the media after hoisting the tricolour said Trichy airport has been receiving tremendous number of passengers, with the airport authorities trying to handle more than 1,000 passengers during the peak hours. After the expansion, the airport will get a new air traffic control room, with upgraded services. The entry and the rear ends will be expanded simultaneously.

The Trichy airport has for the last few years become more profitable, with each year showing an increase of Rs 5 crore. In 2013-14, it hovered around Rs 57 crore, while in 2014-15, it touched Rs 65 crore.

R K Srivastava added that currently there were no plans to privatise the airport and all the works will be expedited in a phased manner.

With the plan to expand the airport itself facing major hurdles in the form of land acquisition problems, the chairman said the state government has been working at a steady pace and the AAI was also making sure that the process gets accelerated.

Out the total 510.30 acres of land that the airport needs to acquire for expansion, 164.68 acres belongs to the defence department. Leaving this land out, the airport is planning to take up steps to acquire the rest of the land and use it for development. This will lead to the extension of the runway, which in turn will facilitate the arrival of the bigger aircrafts and put an end to the existing load restrictions.

R K Sivastava earlier distributed awards to the airport officials for the technological upgrades in the human resources department. Senior assistant manager Diwakar M and senior manager M K Ramachandran were awarded.
