Trichy Division - Railway updates


Southern Railway will allocate eight more DEMU (diesel electric multiple unit) rakes to the Trichy division following the increase in patronage and demand for the existing DEMU trains. At present, DEMU rakes are operated between various destinations in the central districts and have proven a success model among passengers due to the comfortable travel it provides. 

Addressing reporters after inaugurating the passenger and customer facilitation fortnight and cleanliness awareness rally on Tuesday, divisional railway manager, A K Agarwal said the railways is planning to replace 90 unmanned level crossings in the division. 

He further said that officers from the division would undertake an inspection of stations to check for passenger amenities and cleanliness. They would also launch a public awareness campaign with the help of the public and inspect staff colonies. 

Agarwal said that doubling work on the 40-km stretch between Vriddhachalam and Thiruvennainallur has been completed and is awaiting safety audit. He further added that doubling work that is being carried out in the division are mostly in the completion stages. 

For the benefit of passengers and to maintain cleanliness, onboard housekeeping would be introduced on the Trichy - Howrah and Trichy - Mangalore Expresses, he said. 

On the Rs 1 crore escalator project at the Trichy Junction station, Agarwal said that after Rs 45 lakh was initially allocated for its purpose by Trichy Rajya Sabha MP Siva, the railways is now waiting for more funds to complete it. Mr AK 

Agarwal also said that a sum of Rs 10 crore has been allocated for the development of railway stations from Thanjavur to Kumbakonam for the Mahamaham festival scheduled next year. Additional platform shelters at Thanjavur and Swamimalai and toilets at every station would be constructed, he added.
