Synthetic track at Trichy's Anna stadium to be unveiled soon

Aspiring athletes in Trichy region have for long been yearning for a facility on a par with international standards to undergo training.

Their dream would now turn into a reality with the dedication of an eight-lane synthetic athletic track at the Anna stadium here shortly.

Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu is awaiting certification from International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) on the standards of the track.

An announcement by the state government in 2011 paved way for the construction of the track. In July 2013, the construction of the 400m track commenced. With expertise from a Delhi-based company, the track got its shape within a year.

On Thursday, district collector K S Palanisamy inspected the track. He urged the government agencies, including district sports office, public works department and district rural development agency, to complete the work at the earliest.

Officials said the date for the inauguration will be fixed after getting certification from the IAAF.

Trichy will be the fourth city in the state to get an international level facility after Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai.

"The dream of athletes in the region to practice on synthetic track has come true with the new facility in Anna stadium. It will benefit around 200 athletes from the region. With a synthetic track in place, we can expect more qualified athletes from the region to take part in national and international games," said P Kalaichelvan, district sports officer, Trichy.

He recalled the days when skilled athletes like N Annavi and Olympian P Subramanian in Trichy went to other states and countries to practice on synthetic tracks.

A natural grass football ground has also been set up on the inside of the synthetic track. Four flood lights erected in four corners will illuminate the stadium for matches held during night time. The project was implemented at an outlay of Rs 6 crore.

Of late, many district and state-level competitions are being hosted in Anna stadium. The participants have found it difficult to get accommodation in the city.

With a view to provide hassle-free accommodation to sportspersons from others areas, a three-storeyed building at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore is also under construction on the stadium premises.
