Revised estimate puts Srirangam bus stand cost at Rs. 25 crore

The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation (TCC) has revised the cost estimate for the proposed bus stand at Panchakarai in Srirangam on the banks of the Coleroon River. The urgent meeting of the Corporation Council chaired by Mayor A. Jaya on Tuesday approved the proposal. As per the proposal approved in March 2013, the Council gave its consent to construct the bus stand at a cost of Rs.20 crore. It gave its nod for locating the bus stand at Panchakarai, adjacent to the Yatri Nivas.
It is now estimated that it will cost Rs. 25 crore. Additional allocation of Rs. 5 crore is meant for raising the ground level of the proposed site as it was below the road level. It would be used for strengthening the surface of the site, which was used as a grass farm.
An official resolution said a new bus stand in Srirangam was very much needed as it would cater to the needs of increasing arrival of pilgrims to Sri Ranganathar temple. Moreover, there was a need for catering to the local residents. It would give a boost to Srirangam, which is a tourist destination.
The proposal would be sent to the Director of Municipal Administration for administrative sanction. The project was planned to be executed by availing subsidy or loan from the State government.
