The college, started in 2013-14, is currently functioning temporarily out of the Bharathidasan Institute of Technology campus of the Bharathidasan University. The college was opened after former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was elected from the Srirangam Assembly constituency. The college currently offers undergraduate programmes in mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics and communication engineering, and computer science engineering with an intake of 60 in each course.
The State government had sanctioned a new building for the college at Sethurapatti in the constituency limits at an estimated cost of Rs.60.01 crore. The new campus, coming up in an area of about 30.2 acres, is almost ready. The new buildings would be completed by the end of the month, sources said.
The campus includes a main block, an administrative block, principal quarters, an auditorium and separate hostels for boys and girls. The main building of ground plus two floors has 24 classrooms, principal and faculty rooms, library, laboratory, seminar hall, a dispensary and separate provisions for accommodating a bank, cooperative stores, housekeeping, and pantry. It also includes a big drawing hall for the students. The auditorium would have a capacity to seat 750 persons. The campus would have modern amenities such as smart classrooms and gymnasium, the sources said.
The two hostel buildings, both with ground plus three floors, would accommodate 516 students each.
Construction of the buildings commenced in February-end last year and would be completed within 10 months, ahead of the contracted period of 18 months, the sources said. Higher Education Minister P.Palaniappan, during a recent visit to the city, inspected the progress of construction and instructed the officials to complete the works at the earliest.
