V.M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, who held a discussion with the E. Ramganesh, Registrar, R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Campus Director, on Thursday, told The Hindu that he had received a number of representations from students and faculty members demanding additional facilities on a par with the main campus. He too felt the need to develop the campus, which housed a number of centres in an area of about 40 acres of land.
A preliminary plan has been evolved incorporating these demands.
There was a need to construct a multi-purpose conference hall in order to accommodate 500 to 1000 participants.
The plan would be divided into short and long term ones. Establishment of a park at the entrance of the campus would be part of short term plan.
The campus will be beautified with a ‘go green concept.’ The Estate Maintenance wing of the university would come out with an action plan within a week.
Earlier, inaugurating the Wi-Fi facility on the Khajamalai campus, Mr. Muthukumar said that it had already been provided with 8 Mbps Wired Internet connection. Based on demands of students Wi-Fi facility had been established at the Economics Department and Academic Staff College.
The same facility had been extended to the Departments of Education Technology, Social Work, Statistics and Centre for Remote Sensing. The University Informatics Centre was working towards expanding the facility to the rest of the building in the campus. It would be completed within November.
He added that the university had initiated necessary actions to establish Wired Network (Optical Fibre Cable) facilities to all the newly constructed buildings such as Centre for Differently Abled, Women Hostel and Guest House under the campus network upgradation project.
V. Jayaraj, Director, University Informatics Centre, said that the varsity had 1 Gbps Bandwidth Internet connectivity in the main campus. It had initiated necessary actions to expand the National Knowledge Network (NKN) connectivity to the Khajamalai campus so as to upgrade the current 8 Mbps bandwidth to a higher bandwidth.
