Three Tichy parks to be renovated

There is no dearth of public parks in Trichy city, though the area of open places has dwindled due to urbanisation. Unfortunately, most parks within the municipal limits are poorly maintained properly despite liberal release of funds from the civic coffer. In a belated move, Trichy Municipal Corporation is currently planning to renovate three parks in the city at a cost of Rs three lakh each.

The corporation has about 24 parks under its fold. Of these, Thiraviam Pillai Park on Kallar Street, Ranganathan Park on Berangi Road and Lourde Samy Park on EB road will spot a new look soon.

The residents along Kallar Street no longer see Thiraviam Park as a place of leisure anymore. The park is always buzzing with activity as many small commercial establishments are open here. Besides, many use the park as a place for urination though a public lavatory is close by.

Chandra Bose, who stays near the park, said the corporation has been trying to renovate the park for a long time and makes announcements in a big way and conducts inspection periodically, but not a single stone in the park has been moved so far.

The Ranganathan Park is a favourite hub of anti-social elements who find its vast, unused playground fringed by compound wall convenient for their activities. Children no longer use the ground. "Though the planned improvement of parks is welcome news, they should be maintained properly after renovation," said Renuka, a local resident, adding "several nursery and primary schools are in the locality and if the parks are renovated and maintained properly they would serve the public well.

Parks that are located away from main roads are always in a poor shape. Ibrahim Park on West Boulevard Road is, however, an exception.
